Abstract

Selama proses tersebut, peserta melakukan impression management melalui pengelolaan expressions given, expressions given off, definition of the situation, defensive practices, protective practices, dan working consensus agar karakter yang diperankan diterima sebagai sosok yang autentik. Beyond simply wearing fictional character costumes, cosplay has evolved into a performative practice involving the processes of constructing, portraying, and maintaining characters before an audience. This study aims to describe how participants construct and portray their characters in the Cosplay Walk Competition at Aniwave Festival Vol. 3 Jakarta 2026, analyze their performative practices through Erving Goffman's concepts of front stage and backstage, and explain how participants engage in impression management. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with six participants of the Cosplay Walk Competition, and documentation. Data were analyzed through the processes of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that participants' performative practices constitute a performance that begins during the process of constructing the character rather than only when appearing on stage. The performative process consists of three stages: constructing the character, portraying the character, and maintaining the character. This study finds that backstage consists of two dimensions: backstage as a space for constructing the character, including character selection, costume preparation, makeup, wigs, props, and practicing facial expressions, gestures, poses, and voice lines; and backstage as a space for disengaging from the character, where participants return to their everyday identities after the performance. Meanwhile, the front stage serves as the space where participants portray the character through visual appearance, facial expressions, body movements, walking style, voice lines, and interactions with judges and audiences. Throughout this process, participants employ impression management through the management of expressions given, expressions given off, definition of the situation, defensive practices, protective practices, and working consensus to create a convincing and authentic portrayal of the character. This study concludes that the Cosplay Walk Competition is not merely a costume contest but also a social arena where individuals construct, portray, and maintain characters through performative practices. Keywords: Cosplay, Cosplay Walk Competition, Performative Practice, Dramaturgy.
