Abstract

***** Premium reserves play an important role in supporting the ability of life insurance companies to meet their future benefit payment obligations. The Canadian and Commissioners methods are modified methods used in premium reserve calculations, and have differences in modification, particularly in the determination of modified net premiums. This study aims to determine which of the Canadian and Commissioners methods produces larger premium reserves and to analyze the effect of variations in interest rates on the resulting reserve amounts. The product examined in this study is joint-life endowment insurance covering two insured persons under a single policy. This study uses secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Population Mortality Table (TMPI) and the BI Rate. The simulation is divided into two cases: the determination of premium reserves using a constant interest rate and using varying interest rates. The varying interest rates are determined based on the annual averages of the BI Rate over the 2016–2025 period and the constant interest rate is set at 5%, based on the average of the ten interest rates used in the varying-interest-rate case. In the simulation, the insured are a married couple aged 45 and 40, with a coverage period of 10 years. The sum assured is set at IDR 300,000,000, while the end-of-contract benefit is set at 100% of the premium. The results show that the Canadian method produces larger premium reserves than the Commissioners method. Therefore, the Canadian method can be considered more supportive of reserve adequacy from the beginning of the contract. In addition, variations in interest rates affect the resulting premium reserve amounts. At the beginning of the contract period (t = 1 to t = 4), the premium reserves calculated using varying interest rates are larger than those calculated using the constant interest rate, whereas the opposite is true from the middle to near the end of the contract period (t = 5 to t = 9). Based on the average absolute difference between the premium reserves calculated using the constant and varying interest rates, the Commissioners method yields a value of IDR 518,707.07, while the Canadian method yields a value of IDR 509,660.77. The value obtained using the Commissioners method is IDR 9,046.30, or approximately 1.77%, higher than that obtained using the Canadian method. This indicates that, based on this measure, the Commissioners method is more affected by variations in interest rates than the Canadian method. Overall, based on the results under the scenario examined in this study, the Canadian method should be given greater consideration for use because it produces larger premium reserves from the beginning of the contract and is relatively more stable in response to variations in interest rates than the Commissioners method.
