Abstract
***** This research aims to analyse the phenomenon of code-mixing in social media comment section using French, and English in everyday digital communication. Code-mixing in online environments represents a multilingual communication strategy shaped by historical, sociocultural, and educational influences by society. The analysis focuses on the types of code-mixing proposed by Boulkdera & Ladadra (2016) and other support theories. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collected from selected social media comments using purposive sampling. The data were analysed through content analysis techniques supported by Hoffmann’s motivational factors to identify the reasons behind code-mixing practices. The results show that, out of the 30 data obtained, intra-code-mixing was more prevalent than inter-code-mixing, with 27 instances of intra-code-mixing and 3 instances of inter-code-mixing, primarily through the insertion of lexical elements from French and English. The dominance of English is strongly associated with its status as the language of administration and education in many countries, and reflects global trends in digital communication. These results indicate that code-mixing functions not only as a linguistic strategy, but also as a symbolic expression of social identity and multilingual competence.
