Abstract
***** This study, entitled “Liminal Events and Bodily Expression in the Tarawangsa Procession of the Ngalaksa Ceremony in Rancakalong, Sumedang,” aims to analyze the interest of people from outside Rancakalong in participating in the Tarawangsa procession, the formation of liminal events through bodily expression, and the experiences felt during the procession. This study employed a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review. The analysis used Victor Turner’s The Ritual Process through the stages of separation, liminality, and reaggregation as the main theoretical framework, supported by Richard Schechner’s Performance Studies through the concepts of ritual as performance, restored behavior, and transportation. The findings show that public interest was not merely driven by a desire to observe the tradition, but also by cultural and spiritual motivations and the desire to experience the ritual atmosphere directly. The liminal event developed gradually as participants left their daily activities, became involved in the ritual atmosphere, and returned to everyday life after the procession ended. These experiences were reflected in changes in attention, gestures, posture, facial expressions, movement motifs, and emotional responses.
