Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of self-objectification on mental health among emerging adulthood in Jakarta. Mental health is state of well-being indicated with general positive affect, emotional ties and life satisfaction, and the minimum of psychological distress, which indicated with anxiety, depression and lose of emotional and behavioral control. Self-objectification is internalization of objectifying perspective towards appearance, which in turn leading people to see their body as a mere object by engaging with body surveillance and body shame. Self-objectification related to mental health disorder such as depression and anxiety disorders. Purposive sampling was used to obtain 400 participants age 18 to 25 from five municipalities in Jakarta. In this explanative correlational study, mental health was measured by Mental Health Inventory (Veit & Ware, 1983) and Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (McKinley & Hyde, 1996) was used to measure self-objectification. Results indicated women has higher score of self-objectification. Visual-based social media promotes higher score of self-objectification. Intensity of social media usage showed impact on self-objectification score. Analysis of regression show self-objectification has significant negative effect on mental health among emerging adulthood in Jakarta with p 0,000 < α 0,05 and t -6,755 > t table 0,073.
