Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis sistem transitivitas dari fungsi-fungsi retorika kutipan dalam tiga bagian Pendahulan. Fungsi retorika dianalisis menggunakan kerangka kerja Petric (2007) dan sistem transitivitas dianalisis menggunakan analisis transitivitas milik Halliday dan Mathiessen (2004). Transitivitas dikenal sebagai bagian dari fungsi pengalaman (experiential function). Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif untuk mendeskripsikan teks-teks yang terdapat di dalam artikel. Lembar data yang digunakan untuk mencatat pilihan kalimat artikel terdiri dari tiga tabel. Kutipan yang diambil untuk penelitian ini sebagai data dikumpulkan dari tiga bagian Pendahulan dari Artikel di Journal of English for Academic Purposes. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa fungsi retorika yang dicirikan adalah Attribution, Establishing Link between Sources, Exemplification, Evaluation, dan Further Reference, tetapi Attribution merupakan setidaknya 50% dari jumlah kutipan. Fungsi retorika yang ditemukan pada penelitian ini sebagian besar diwakili oleh proses Material. Hal ini terjadi karena beberapa kutipan menunjukan proses melakukan (process of doing). Proses kedua yang paling sering ditemukan yaitu proses Mental. Beberapa kata “found” muncul berulang kali dalam penelitian ini, yang mana kata ini mewakili proses berfikir (process of thinking). Sementara itu, Participant yang paling sering ditemukan yaitu Goal. Actor dan Goal berkaitan dengan proses Material, tetapi Goal ditemukan lebih banyak dari Actor karena beberapa klausa tidak menyatakan Actor secara tersurat. Kemudian, Circumstance yang paling sering ditemukan yaitu Location. Location berkaitan dengan tempat dan waktu yang mana dalam ketiga artikel tersebut beberapa kutipan berkaitan dengan waktu dan tempat. Attribution merupakan fungsi retorika yang paling sederhana dan mudah digunakan dalam menulis kutipan. Analisis transitivitas dalam penelitian ini bermanfaat untuk mengidentifikasi sebuah proses yang merepresentasikan kutipan beserta fungsi retorikanya. This study aims to examine the transitivity system of the rhetorical functions of citations in three Introduction sections. The rhetorical functions were analyzed using Petric’s (2007) framework and the transitivity system was analyzed using Halliday and Mathiessen’s (2004) transitivity analysis. Transitivity is known as a part of experiential function. This study applied descriptive qualitative design to describe the texts found in the articles. The data sheets used to note the chosen sentences of the articles consisted of three tables. The citations taken for this study as the data were collected from the Introduction sections of three articles in Journal of English for Academic Purposes. This study found that the characterized rhetorical functions were Attribution, Establishing Link between Sources, Exemplification, Evaluation, and Further Reference, but Attribution takes at least 50% of the total number of citations. The rhetorical functions found in this study were mostly represented by the Material Process. It happened due to several citations showing the process of doing. The second most frequent process found in this study is the Mental process. Some words of “found” occurred repeatedly in this study, which this word represents the process of thinking. Meanwhile, the most frequent Participant is Goal. Actor and Goal are related to Material process, but Goal found much more than Actor because some clauses do not state the Actor explicitly. Then, the most frequent Circumstance found in the three articles is Location. Circumstance of Location is related to place and time which in the three articles some citations are related to time and place. Attribution is the simplest rhetorical function used to write a citation. Transitivity Analysis in this study is harnessing to identify a process of the citation and its rhetorical function.
