Abstract
Other Words for Home karya Jasmine Warga. Kata Kunci: Pemberdayaan Perempuan, Feminisme, Matriks Dominasi, Definisi-Diri ********* This study aims to investigate women’s empowerment as a form or resistance against oppressions in Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga. Deploying Patricia Hill Collins’ feminist concepts of Matrix of Domination and Self-Definition, this study applies descriptive analytical method to analyse how the intersecting oppressions against Syrian refugee women occurred through Matrix of Domination and how Self-Definition helped fostering Syrian refugee women’ empowerment in resisting the intersecting oppressions. The result of this study suggests that Jude, a Syrian refugee girl was oppressed both in Syria and in the United States due to her overlapping identity markers, such as those of gender, social class, age, ethnicity and religion in four main domains of domination of structural, disciplinary, hegemonic, and interpersonal. In Syria, Jude was oppressed by the government under the reign of President Bashar Al Assad in structural domain. Meanwhile in the United States, Jude was oppressed in the other three domains of domination. First, Jude was oppressed in disciplinary domain where she was put in a hostile environment purposely created by Americans in order to preserve her subordination. Second, Jude was oppressed in hegemonic domain where hegemonic ideologies regarding Syrian refugees, Arab women, and Muslims were negatively portrayed in mass medias so that Americans tended to have bad perceptions about Jude. Third, Jude was also oppressed in interpersonal domain within everyday life. On the other hand, Self-Definition helped Jude to resist the intersecting oppressions. With Self-Definition, Jude learnt to nurture certain behaviours, such as self-valuation and respect, self-reliance and independence, and personal empowerment to foster the women’s empowerment within herself in resisting the stereotypes that were the base of intersecting oppressions addressed to her. Keywords: Women’s Empowerment, Feminism, Matrix of Domination, Self-Definition
