Abstract

The study aimed to discover types of circumstance purposed in two children’s animal encyclopedia from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) view. This research focused on the variation of circumstances in the two children’s animal encyclopedia entries. The (SFL) approach was applied in this research, thus the meaning of experiential meta function in sub chapters of animal was analyzed by using transitivity system. The data used in this study consisted of 341 clauses from 10 similar animal chapters in both encyclopedias. The results of this study showed how the circumstance varied at functional and formal level. Based on the major findings concern to the variation of circumstance types in two children’s animal encyclopedia, it is proposed that encyclopedia text can be a potential material in learning report text for students to have more understanding in language functions instead of text structures. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis keadaan yang dimaksudkan dalam dua ensiklopedia hewan anak dari pandangan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Penelitian ini difokuskan pada variasi keadaan pada entri ensiklopedia hewan kedua anak tersebut. Pendekatan (SFL) diterapkan dalam penelitian ini, dengan demikian makna experiential meta function pada sub bab hewan dianalisis dengan menggunakan sistem transitivitas. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari 341 klausa dari 10 bab hewan yang serupa di kedua ensiklopedia. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana keadaan bervariasi pada tingkat fungsional dan formal. Berdasarkan temuan utama mengenai variasi jenis keadaan dalam dua ensiklopedia hewan anak, diusulkan bahwa teks ensiklopedia dapat menjadi bahan potensial dalam pembelajaran teks laporan bagi siswa untuk lebih memahami fungsi bahasa daripada struktur teks.
