Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa dan mengungkapkan penggambaran Puritanisme dalam cerita pendek pilihan oleh Nathaniel Hawthorne (Ethan Brand, Young Goodman Brown, dan The Minister’s Black Veil). Penulis menggunakan teori Puritanisme oleh Bremer dan Crawford untuk menganalisis Puritanisme didalam cerita pendek pilihan oleh Nathaniel Hawthorne. Sumber data penelitian ialah diambil dari situs online-literature. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif analitikum untuk memberikan penjelasan dan pemahaman yang cukup yang muncul dalam cerita pendek pilihan oleh Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Nathaniel Hawthorne berhasil membawa isu Puritanisme melalui cerita pendek pilihan penulis. Cerita pendek tersebut menunjukkan tiga prinsip dasar Puritanisme seperti kebobrokan manusia, pemilihan, dan takdir serta banyak juga karateristik orang-orang Puritan seperti Tuhan dan iblis aktif di dunia, masyarakat Puritan percaya pada sumber dosa dan penafsiran harfiah dari Alkitab, masyarakat Puritan memiliki sifat menghakimi dan sering tidak toleran, dan juuga nilai-nilai masyarakat Puritan pada pendidikan sangat tinggi dan berorientasi pada keluarga. The aim of this study is to analyze and reveal the portrayal of the Puritanism in selected Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short stories (Ethan Brand, Young Goodman Brown, and The Minister’s Black Veil). The writer applies the theory of the Puritanism by Bremer and Crawford to analyze the Puritanism in the selected Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short stories. The data source of the study is taken from online-literature website. This study uses descriptive analytical method which provides sufficient explanation and understandings that appears in the selected Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short stories. The result of this study shows that the selected Nathaniel Hawthorne’s success to put inside the Puritanism issues through the selected short stories. They are showing three basic tenets of the Puritan such as the depravity of man, election, and predestination and also many characteristics of the Puritans such as the Puritan believes in God and devil are active in the world, Puritan society believes in the original sin and literal interpretation of the bible, Puritan society is judgmental and often intolerant, and also Puritan society values in education and family oriented.
