Abstract

Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu bagaimana identitas hibrid tergambar di karakter utama When We Were Orphans. Novel ini diceritakan dari sudut pandang orang pertama yang bercerita tentang kebingungan identitas yang dialami oleh karakter utama, Christopher Banks. Skripsi ini akan dianalisis menggunakan teori Hybridity dari Homi K. BhaBha, New Ethnicities dari Stuart Hall, dan konsep tingkatan proses budaya dari Raymond Williams. Metode yang digunakan di skripsi ini adalah analisis deskriptif yang dilakukan dengan menganalisis narasi dan dialog dari novel tersebut. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukan identitas hibrid yang tergambar di perilaku dan pola pikir karakter utama, yaitu seorang imigran. Dengan demikian, Christopher tidak bisa menolak atau menghindari setiap budaya yang ada di area tersebut. Sehingga etnis baru hadir dan Christopher memiliki identitas hibrid. Disamping itu, skripsi ini juga menerapkan teori Poskolonial yang dapat membantu pemahaman tentang analisis identitas dalam penelitian terkait lainnya. This study is intended to find out how hybrid identity portrayed in When We Were Orphans’ main character. This novel is based on the first-person point of view which narrates the identity confusion of main character, Christopher Banks. This paper is analyzed by using Hybridity theory by Homi K. BhaBha, New Ethnicities by Stuart Hall, and stages of cultural process concept by Raymond Williams. The research method in this study is descriptive analytical which is done by exploring the narration and dialogue of the novel. The result of the study shows the hybrid identity which is portrayed through the main character’s behavior and way of thought as an immigrant, therefore he cannot deny nor avoid every culture that exists in the area. Thus, the new ethnicities appears and Christopher has hybrid identity. Besides, this study also applies postcolonial theory to give an understanding especially for identity analysis in other related studies.
