Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari bagaimana identitas budaya hibrid generasi pertama imigran India yang bermigrasi ke Amerika Serikat dan Inggris digambarkan dalam novel Quichotte karya Salman Rushdie. Menggunakan konsep pascakolonial Bhabha tentang mimikri, ambivalensi dan hibriditas, didukung oleh konsep identitas budaya Hall, penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif analitis untuk menganalisis proses dan sebab hibriditas budaya yang dialami oleh enam tokoh imigran India: Ismail Smile (Quichotte), Dr .R.K. Smile, Miss Salma R., Awwal Sant (Evel Cent), Brother (Sam DuChamp) dan Sister. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa identitas budaya hibrid dari keenam karakter imigran muncul dari proses asimilasi dan adaptasi dengan budaya Barat yang dominan sebagai konsekuensi hidup dalam masyarakat Anglosfer. Upaya peniruan dalam bentuk mimikri yang seringkali dilakukan demi tercapainya integrasi mengakibatkan perasaan ambivalen sebagai orang India dan Barat; yang pada beberapa karakter juga dipicu dengan pengalaman diskriminasi dan prasangka karena mereka dipandang sebagai Liyan oleh masyarakat kulit putih yang dominan. Menempatkan diri diantara dua identitas, pada akhirnya para karakter imigran ini mengatasi ambivalensi mereka terhadap dua budaya yang kontras dan menemukan keseimbangan dari dua oposisi biner antara Timur dan Barat; mencapai keseimbangan antara identitas untuk menghasilkan identitas hibridisasi baru sebagai India-Amerika dan India-Inggris. ************ This study aims to investigate how the cultural hybrid identity of the first-generation Indian immigrants who migrated to the United States and the United Kingdom are revealed in a novel Quichotte by Salman Rushdie. Deploying Bhabha's postcolonial concepts of mimicry, ambivalence and hybridity, supported by Hall's concept of cultural identity, this study applies descriptive analytical method to analyze the processes and reasons for cultural hybridity underwent by the six Indian immigrant characters: Ismail Smile (Quichotte), Dr. R. K. Smile, Miss Salma R., Awwal Sant (Evel Cent), Brother (Sam DuChamp) and Sister. The result of this study indicates that the hybrid cultural identity of the six immigrant characters emerges from the process of assimilation and adaptations with the dominant Western culture as a consequence of living in Anglosphere society. The frequent attempts of imitation in the form of mimicry to achieve integration resulted in ambivalent feelings as both Indian and Western; a feeling that was also triggered in some characters by experiencing acts of discrimination and prejudice as they are seen as the Other by the dominant White society. Placing themselves between the two identities, in the end these immigrant characters overcome their ambivalence of two contrasting cultures and found an equilibrium of the two binary opposition of being East and West; reaching a balance between identities to generate a new hybridized identity as Indian-American and Indian-British.
