Abstract

The purpose of this study is to measure the readability in the Indonesian Version of iPhone 4 Quick Start Manual User Guide and identify the factors of readability in terms of translation field of study. Readability is one of criteria in assessing the quality of a translation product besides the accuracy, naturalness, and the clarity. The text which is analyzed in this study is the 18 units of Indonesian Version of iPhone 4 Quick Start Manual User Guide. The study is conducting by using survey study and analyzed by using descriptive analytical method. It makes the writer possible to describe the facts and analyze them. This study is conducted using the readability measurement theory by Edward Fry in measuring the readability and the theory of readability factors by Rudolf Nababan and Mildred Larson in identifying the internal and external factors of readability for translation field of study. The readability measurement of this quick start manual user guide shows that the readability grade of this manual user guide is in the range of the 4th up to 11th grades. It implies that this manual user guide can be read easily by the readership of those ranges, the Elementary School until Senior High School. Besides, it is found the internal factors which occur in this translated version of quick start manual user guide, they are 41% the use of foreign words, 40% the use of complex sentences, and 19% the average sentence length. The external factors which appear in this manual user guide are the size of type, the font type, the margin size, the spacing between lines, the misspelling, and the punctuation false. Those factors are found based on the survey to the respondents. The percentages among them are definitely different.
