Abstract

***** This study investigates the "limit" of translation within a nonsense literature titled In His Own Write by John Lennon. This kind of literature is described as a "playful tension" between sense and nonsense, balancing between the aspect of translatability and untranslatability. Jean Jacques Lecercle stated how translation towards nonsense literature is necessary as a small possibility of translation is possible if there is still a small possibility of sense. As such, the research attempted to translate the selected short stories within the book In His Own Write. An annotated translation method was being applied in this research, with Delabastita's strategies in translating wordplay and Baker's strategies in translating idiom being the overall approaches. In particular, Peter Newmark's procedures of translation as well as procedures regarding "unfindable" words will be applied as a further techniques to translate the nonsensical aspects in the form of wordplay. The translation process showed how the wordplay, which being the main aspect of this literary nonsense, were commonly being the polysemy type, with the strategy of translating wordplay to non-wordplay being frequently used. Specifically, the procedure of "modulation" is commonly chosen, which means that the translator attempted to make a communicative translation by altering the original passages and abandoning the wordplay when being translated to the target language. As such, the translator removed the originality of the wordplay from the source text. As a "benighted foreigner", the translator found that the "limit" was observed within the sociocultural distinction between the source and the target language, which resulted in the translator inevitably missing the cultural references behind the wordplay written by the author. However, while the translation could still be considered as flawed, Lecercle stated how it could be still recognised as the most complete translation, as the nature of nonsense itself is contradictory.
