Abstract

This study aims at identifying English learning materials taught to primary school students and analyzing whether they were relevant to the Basic competences for the first grade of primary school. It was done from April until June 2012. The data were collected through document collection, classroom observation and interview. The data showed that the kinds of English learning materials used for the first grade of primary school students at SDN RSBI Rawamangun 12 Jakarta were alphabet, greetings, numbers, colors, things at home, things in the classroom, parts of body, and means of transportation. They were taken from songs, vocabulary lists, short dialogues, puzzles and pictures. The materials were also systematically arranged in simple form, starting from simple to more difficult topics and consist of interesting activities, such as coloring, acting, cutting and pasting pictures and whatever materials that concern with their motoric sides. The result of the study showed that the materials were relevant to the Basic Competences for the first grade of primary school, since they contained short instructions by accompanying actions in the classroom context and the topics were related to the students’ daily life. It can be seen from the availability of materials in accordance with the points of the Basic Competences to achieve the students’ needs of achievement. This study implies that the English teachers could provide not only relevant materials in accordance with the Basic Competences for the first grade of primary school, but also must be interesting and varied to make the students eager to learn English.
