Abstract
Balikpapan waters have great potential in the fisheries sector, but capture fisheries in this area are dominated by local fishermen who fish as far as 4 nautical miles. This is due to the type of fleet and fishing gear that is still conventional and substandard. This study analyzes the spatial distribution of potential fishing grounds for small and large pelagic fish in Balikpapan Waters, East Kalimantan. Oceanographic parameters, such as sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a, salinity, ocean currents, and bathymetry, were analyzed using Aqua MODIS image data as well as other sources, combined with spatial analysis on four fishing seasons in 2023. Descriptive quantitative methods were used in this study. The intersect overlay technique was applied to obtain maps of potential and less potential fishing areas. The results showed that coastal waters were classified as less potential, while offshore was more potential. In the West season, fishing grounds developed west of the Makassar Strait up to 12 miles, while in the East season, the spatial distribution was wider with a dominance of offshore areas >12 nautical miles. Validation shows that the fishing area in the East season reaches 87.23%, indicating that this map can be used as a reference for fishermen.
