Abstract
***** This study investigates the impact of corruption and government expenditure on foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows within the ASEAN region. An investor's decision to commit capital is typically shaped by push factors, such as economic stability and infrastructure, and pull factors, including investor perceptions of political risk and return on investment in the host country. Employing panel data from 2010 to 2023, sourced from UNCTAD, Transparency International, and the World Bank, this research analyzes the Corruption Perception Index, government spending, and FDI flows. The data was analyzed using a multiple panel data regression with a Random Effect Model. The findings reveal that simultaneously, the Corruption Perception Index and government expenditure have a significant effect on FDI. However, when analyzed individually, the Corruption Perception Index does not show a significant influence on FDI. Conversely, government spending is found to have a significant and positive impact on attracting foreign direct investment. This suggests that in the context of ASEAN nations during the specified period, government expenditure patterns served as a more critical determinant for foreign investors than the perceived levels of corruption.
