Abstract

Diikuti oleh pelanggaran Maxim of Relation (11%), sementara Maxim of Quantity dan Manner masing-masing hanya muncul satu kali (4%). ***** This thesis focuses on the types of maxim violations, the deception strategies used, and the context and impact of those violations within legal processes through character interaction. The method used is a qualitative approach based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975), which includes four maxims (Quality, Quantity, Relation, and Manner), along with the Interpersonal Deception Theory (IDT) developed by David Buller and Judee Burgoon (1996), which identifies three main deception strategies: Falsification, Concealment, and Equivocation. Data were taken from 27 utterances that indicate maxim violations and deception strategies. The analysis reveals that violations of the Maxim of Quality are the most dominant (81%) and are most frequently associated with the strategy of Falsification (70%). This is followed by violations of Maxim of Relation (11%), while the Maxim of Quantity and Manner each appeared only once (4%). Lyle Menendez was found to be the character who violated maxims the most, especially in the context of media interviews, legal testimony, and private confrontation. Meanwhile, the Concealment strategy (19%) appeared mostly during therapy sessions, and Equivocation (11%) was used in moments of high-pressure interrogation. These findings suggest that maxim violations are done intentionally and strategically, depending on the conditions at hand. The lies told are not only meant to deceive others but also serve as a way to protect themselves from shame, trauma, or psychological breakdown. These violations have a direct effect on relationships between characters, delays in justice during legal proceedings, and the public’s perception of truth.
