Abstract

This study aims to synthesize ZnO and Fe-doped ZnO (ZnO:Fe) nanoparticles using a green biosynthesis method based on Moringa oleifera leaf extract and to evaluate the effects of doping on their structural, morphological, optical, and photocatalytic properties. The synthesis was carried out via a precipitation method at pH 10 followed by calcination at 450 °C. Characterizations were conducted using XRD, SEM-EDX, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and FTIR. XRD results confirmed that all samples exhibited a hexagonal wurtzite structure without secondary phases, with crystallite size decreasing upon Fe doping. SEM analysis revealed spherical morphology for pure ZnO, while Fe doping led to aggregation and irregular particle shapes. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of –OH, C=O, C–H, and Zn–O functional groups involved in nanoparticle formation. UV-Vis analysis showed a decrease in bandgap from 3.31 eV (ZnO) to 2.25 eV (ZnO:Fe 12%). Photocatalytic tests using methylene blue indicated that pure ZnO demonstrated the highest degradation efficiency under both UV (89.78%) and visible light (30.86%). The decreased performance of doped samples is attributed to particle agglomeration and recombination center formation. Overall, this study shows that although Fe doping modifies the optical properties of ZnO, excessive doping negatively affects its photocatalytic efficiency.
