Abstract

The Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) is the largest waste management facility in Indonesia. On the other hand, the facility has a high risk of fire due to the accumulation of waste and the formation of methane gas. This study aims to analyze the level of risk, characteristics, and patterns of waste fires, as well as to plan a fire detection system, firefighting water requirements, water sources, and firefighting equipment at the Bantargebang TPST. The method used in this study is descriptive quantitative with a technical calculation approach (engineering approach). The data used in this study were obtained through direct observation and literature study consisting of technical standards, relevant research, and supporting documents from the Bantargebang TPST. The results of the study show that the active waste storage area has a moderate to high risk of fire, with fire characteristics that are difficult to control due to the potential for landfill fires. This study also describes four phases of waste fire patterns and shows that methane gas detectors are the most suitable type of detector for an early fire detection system at the Bantargebang TPST. The calculation results show that in a 1-hectare fire scenario, the water requirement for extinguishing the fire reaches around 2.7 million liters, so a permanent water source in the form of a fire pond with a minimum capacity of 3,000 m³ and the support of firefighting robots are needed to ensure the effectiveness of early extinguishing in the worst conditions. Based on these findings, the Bantargebang TPST is advised to implement methane gas detectors, provide a permanent water source for firefighting in the form of a fire pond according to the calculation requirements, and integrate robot-based firefighting technology to improve the effectiveness and safety of firefighting.
