Abstract

Kata kunci: budaya populer Jepang, anime dan manga, media massa, komunitas penggemar, Jabodetabek ***** This study examines the introduction, development, and transformation of Japanese popular culture in Indonesia from 1975 to 2012, focusing on anime, manga, tokusatsu, Ultraman, J-Pop, Japanese television dramas, and cosplay practices. The research traces the initial entry of Japanese visual culture through the broadcast of early anime such as Wanpaku Omukashi Kum-Kum on TVRI in the late 1970s, which marked the beginning of Japanese popular culture in Indonesian domestic media spaces. Alongside the expansion of mass media particularly television and print media Japanese popular culture deepened its presence through anime broadcasts, tokusatsu series, Japanese dramas, and licensed manga publications in Indonesian. Following the Reform era and the wider access to the internet since the late 1990s, the consumption of Japanese popular culture shifted from passive viewing to active participation through fan communities, online forums, and cultural practices such as cosplay. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in social history and cultural studies, this research analyzes the relationship between media, community formation, and youth identity, with a particular focus on the Jabodetabek region. The findings reveal that Japanese popular culture functions not only as entertainment but also as a space for identity expression, informal learning, and creative community building. Consequently, Japanese popular culture constitutes an integral part of contemporary Indonesian cultural history, reflecting processes of globalization, identity negotiation, and socio-technological transformation among the younger generation. Keywords: Japanese popular culture, anime and manga, mass media, fan communities, Jabodetabek
