Abstract
***** Romantic breakup is a common life event during adolescence and may result in significant psychological distress known as breakup distress, characterized by emotional, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms that interfere with academic and social functioning. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of group counseling using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in reducing breakup distress among adolescents at SMAN 55 Jakarta. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was employed, involving 12 students divided into an experimental group and a control group. The research instruments were the Breakup Distress Scale (BDS) and the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II). The experimental group received six ACT-based group counseling sessions, each lasting approximately 45 minutes, while the control group received no intervention. The results indicated that the experimental group showed a significant reduction in BDS scores by 25 points from the high to the low category and a decrease in AAQ-II scores by 18.67 points, reflecting increased psychological flexibility, whereas the control group exhibited increased scores on both measures. These findings demonstrate that ACT-based group counseling is effective in reducing breakup distress and enhancing psychological flexibility among adolescents and can be recommended as a school-based counseling intervention.
