Abstract
***** This study examines forms of fatalism and existentialism in the main character of the novel Robert des Noms Propres by Amélie Nothomb using Taylor’s (2011) theory of fatalism and Sartre’s (2018) theory of existentialism. The research employs a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The findings indicate that fatalism dominates Plectrude’s way of thinking, with the sufficiency condition emerging as the most frequent category (50%), reflecting her belief that her life has been predetermined from the beginning through her talent for dancing. In addition, the law of the excluded middle accounts for 37.5%, indicating a black-and-white worldview, while necessity represents 12.5%, signifying the perceived obligation to meet certain conditions for her future. In terms of existentialism, Plectrude’s life is predominantly characterized by être-pour-autrui (69%), highlighting the strong influence of others’ perceptions on her self-concept. Être-pour-soi appears in 28.6% of the data through several autonomous decisions, whereas être-en-soi is minimally represented at 2.4%. These findings demonstrate that the conflict between fate and freedom shapes Plectrude’s life experiences and confirm that human experience cannot be fully explained solely through either fatalism or existentialism.
