Abstract
********************************************** Sensor drift can affect the consistency of Electronic Nose (E-Nose) responses during repeated measurements. This study optimized an E-Nose based on MQ and TGS sensors through thermal conditioning and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for drift reduction and classification of Gayo Wine and Toraja coffees. Measurements were conducted at 40°C, 45°C, and 50°C. The data were processed through preprocessing and feature extraction, followed by drift analysis, Mutual Information Based Filter (MIBF) sensor selection, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and classification using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation (LOOCV). The results showed that 50°C produced more controlled drift characteristics, with most MQ sensors exhibiting Absolute drift below 1.7%. For the TGS array, the peak drift of TGS2602 decreased from 12.1% at 40°C to 1.9% at 50°C, while TGS2620 for Toraja changed from −10.15% to 0.7%. The highest MIBF scores were 0.3977 for MQ3 and 0.697 for TGS2602. The MQ array achieved classification accuracies of 82.5–100%, whereas the TGS array achieved 100% across all tested configurations. Reducing the TGS array from nine to three sensors (66.67%) retained 94.19% of the variance and maintained 100% accuracy. SVM also demonstrated better computational efficiency than ANN, with lower runtime across all tested conditions. These results indicate that thermal conditioning and UV irradiation support drift control, while sensor selection enables a more compact E-Nose configuration without compromising classification performance.
