Abstract
***** Limited access to written information remains a major barrier for individuals with visual impairments in achieving literacy independence. Existing Braille media still face limitations in terms of production costs and the availability of reading materials. This study was conducted to develop and evaluate a portable book-reading assistive device based on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) with full-cycle control (start, rewind, and stop) to enable individuals with visual impairments to read printed text book independently. The development method employed was Research and Development (R&D) using the V-Model development approach. The prototype was developed using a Raspberry Pi Zero W as the main controller, integrated with a camera module, an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for reading distance optimization, an LDR sensor and LED for automatic lighting control, an object identification system, and a Bluetooth earphone to provide Text to Speech (TTS) audio output. The test results demonstrated that the prototype successfully integrated the OCR and TTS systems, achieving a reading accuracy of 100% for Arial, Times New Roman, and Helvetica fonts. In addition, the system was able to distinguish books from non-book objects at distances ranging from 30 cm to 45 cm and automatically activate the LED when the LDR sensor resistance exceeded 9,000 Ω.
