Abstract
The high rate of lower-extremity injuries among young female basketball athletes (70% of 20 athletes in a preliminary survey) motivated this quasi-experimental study, which examined the effectiveness of resistance band-based muscle activation on knee-ankle Range of Motion (ROM) and muscle electromyographic activity as a warm-up support in 30 female athletes aged 13–14 years (experimental group n = 15 vs. a dynamic-warm-up control group n = 15), measured with a goniometer and surface electromyography (sEMG). All ROM variables and the electromyographic activity of all four muscles (vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior) increased significantly in both groups (p < 0.05, with large effect sizes in the experimental group: r = 0.61–0.90; d = 1.04–1.12), with the experimental group significantly superior only in gastrocnemius activity (p = 0.039) — an advantage driven more by the correspondence between the exercise movement pattern and the EMG measurement protocol than by the frequency of muscle involvement alone. These findings indicate that resistance band-based muscle activation is an effective warm-up component that improves athletes’ neuromuscular readiness, with an additional advantage in calf muscle readiness compared to dynamic warm-up.
