Abstract

***** Heavy traffic congestion in Jakarta has the potential to cause driving stress among motorcycle riders, particularly those in the productive age group who have high mobility. Although riders are exposed to relatively similar traffic conditions, the level of driving stress they experience may differ due to internal psychological factors, one of which is self-control. This study aimed to examine the effect of self-control on driving stress among productive-age motorcycle riders who actively travel across the Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta). This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. The sample consisted of 221 respondents selected through purposive sampling, with the criteria of motorcycle riders aged 18–59 years who actively traveled across DKI Jakarta at least five round trips per week. Data were collected using the Self-Control Scale adapted from the Brief Self-Control Scale developed by Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone (2004), consisting of 13 items, and the Driving Stress Scale adapted from the Indonesian Driving Stress Scale based on the concept proposed by Gulian et al., consisting of 16 items. The data were analyzed using simple linear regression analysis. The results indicated that self-control had a significant negative effect on driving stress (β = -0.600; p < 0.001). Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.332, indicating that self-control accounted for 33.2% of the variance in driving stress, while the remaining 66.8% was explained by factors outside the scope of this study. The correlation analysis also revealed a significant negative relationship between self-control and driving stress (r = -0.576; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that individuals with higher levels of self-control tend to experience lower levels of driving stress.
