Abstract

This study analyses conceptual metaphors in Mitski’s Puberty 2. It aims to identify the conceptual metaphors found in the album and to explain how mappings between source domains and target domains explain attachment and loss experience across the songs. The research applies Conceptual Metaphor Theory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) using a qualitative descriptive method and a corpus-based cognitive semantic approach. Lyric lines containing metaphorical expressions are analysed by determining their concrete source domains and abstract target domains and formulating them as conceptual metaphor statements. The findings show that attachment is predominantly conceptualised through ontological metaphors that represent emotional connection as concrete and embodied experiences, while loss is primarily conceptualised through ontological, orientational, and structural metaphors that emphasise physical transformation, spatial orientation, and emotional change. Although both attachment and loss mainly rely on ontological metaphors, they are organised through different conceptual patterns. Attachment is understood through sensory and embodied experiences that make emotional connection tangible, whereas loss is understood through transformation, damage, movement, and changing emotional conditions. These findings demonstrate that Conceptual Metaphor Theory provides an effective framework for explaining how abstract emotional experiences are represented and understood through metaphorical language in song lyrics. ***** Penelitian ini menganalisis metafora konseptual dalam album Puberty 2 karya Mitski. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengidentifikasi metafora konseptual yang terdapat dalam album tersebut serta menjelaskan bagaimana pemetaan antara ranah sumber (source domain) dan ranah sasaran (target domain) membangun pengalaman keterikatan (attachment) dan kehilangan (loss) di seluruh lagu. Analisis dilakukan dengan menerapkan Teori Metafora Konseptual oleh Lakoff dan Johnson (1980) menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan pendekatan semantik kognitif berbasis korpus. Baris-baris lirik yang mengandung ungkapan metaforis dianalisis dengan mengidentifikasi ranah sumber yang bersifat konkret dan ranah sasaran yang bersifat abstrak, kemudian merumuskannya ke dalam pernyataan metafora konseptual. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa keterikatan didominasi oleh metafora ontologis yang merepresentasikan hubungan emosional sebagai pengalaman yang konkret dan berwujud, sedangkan kehilangan terutama dikonseptualisasikan melalui metafora ontologis, orientasional, dan struktural yang menekankan transformasi fisik, orientasi spasial, serta perubahan emosional. Meskipun keterikatan dan kehilangan sama-sama didominasi oleh metafora ontologis, keduanya tersusun melalui pola konseptual yang berbeda. Keterikatan dipahami melalui pengalaman indrawi dan pengalaman yang diwujudkan secara fisik sehingga hubungan emosional menjadi lebih nyata, sedangkan kehilangan dipahami melalui transformasi, kerusakan, pergerakan, dan perubahan kondisi emosional. Temuan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa Teori Metafora Konseptual merupakan kerangka yang efektif untuk menjelaskan bagaimana pengalaman emosional yang bersifat abstrak direpresentasikan dan dipahami melalui bahasa metaforis dalam lirik lagu.
