Abstract
***** Malaria is an infectious disease whose transmission involves interactions between human and mosquito populations. This study aims to formulate and analyze a mathematical model of malaria transmission by incorporating age structure and asymptomatic individuals in Papua. The human population is divided into two age groups, namely individuals younger than 5 years and individuals aged 5 years or older. Each age group consists of susceptible, exposed, symptomatically infected, asymptomatically infected, and recovered compartments. The mosquito population is divided into susceptible and infected compartments, resulting in a SEIARS–SI model consisting of 12 nonlinear differential equations. The analysis includes determining the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points, examining local stability, and calculating the basic reproduction number using the Next Generation Matrix method. Numerical simulations are performed using Maple with parameter values obtained from secondary data for Papua Province and relevant literature. Local Stability. The results show that R0 ≈ 1,700627608 > 1, indicating that malaria can persist within the population. The disease-free equilibrium is unstable, whereas the endemic equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable. The numerical simulation results also show that the infected compartments in both the human and mosquito populations tend toward positive values at the endemic equilibrium. Therefore, the model indicates that asymptomatic individuals and differences in age structure should be considered in describing the dynamics of malaria transmission in Papua.
