Abstract

*****This research is motivated by the phenomenon of high public curiosity, which often leads individuals to directly access crime scenes, thereby risking the contamination and destruction of evidence. This psychological characteristic is subsequently adapted into a design concept for an interactive medium in the form of an investigative board game. The study employs a qualitative research method utilizing a design thinking approach, which consists of the inspiration, ideate, and implementation stages. Data collection was conducted through a literature review, document studies on murder cases, observations at board game cafes in Jakarta, interviews with criminal law enforcement practitioners and board game experts, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving target users aged 18–25, and preliminary studies of similarly themed board games. The outcome of this design process is an investigative board game titled "Alibi," which incorporates deduction and narrative-driven mechanics paired with a comic illustration style. This game delivers an investigative experience by integrating the theory of environmental storytelling. The findings conclude that environmental storytelling is highly effective in transforming the visual background of a crime scene into an active narrative communicator. By manipulating object layouts, textures, and spatial mood, the game allows players to independently reconstruct the chronological events. Furthermore, this design underscores the importance of adhering to a code of ethics; sensitive visual elements are strictly curated to serve purely as a narrative tool, avoiding the dramatization or exploitation of gore and violence.
