Abstract

Hardiness and coping strategies play a vital role in predicting stress levels. Objective—This study aims to examine the partial and simultaneous effects of hardiness and coping strategies (problem-focused, emotion-focused, and dysfunctional coping) on stress among young TNI AD soldiers during the duty transition period. Method—This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 212 young Non-Commissioned Officers (Bintara) and Enlisted Personnel (Tamtama) in an Infantry Battalion (Yonif) of the Indonesian Army in eastern Indonesia. Data collection instruments included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) to measure stress, the Dispositional Resilience Scale (DRS-15) to measure hardiness, and the Brief COPE to measure three dimensions of coping strategies. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. Results—The results showed that hardiness, problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and dysfunctional coping simultaneously had a significant effect on stress (F = 13.85; p < 0.001; R² = 0.211). Partially, direct negative and significant effects on stress were demonstrated by hardiness (β = -0.1818; t = -2.678; p < 0.001), problem-focused coping (β = -0.4508; t = -4.586; p < 0.001), and emotion-focused coping (β = -0.3031; t = -3.234; p = 0.001). Conversely, dysfunctional coping showed the most dominant positive and significant effect on increasing stress (β = 0.5030; t = 5.373; p < 0.001), contributing the largest effective contribution of 18.09%. Conclusion— Hardiness and adaptive coping strategies (problem-focused and emotion-focused) act as protective factors against stress. Conversely, dysfunctional coping (especially self-distraction and behavioral disengagement) is the main trigger for increased stress. Practical implications emphasize mental toughness training and reducing dysfunctional coping for new soldiers.
