Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation of power harassment (pawahara) in the film Tsumi no Koe(2020) directed by Nobuhiro Doi through a psychosocial literary approach. Literature mirrors the social reality of the society in which it is produced, and the abuse of power is no exception. According to the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, consultations concerning power harassment received by labour bureaus in fiscal year 2024 exceeded 60,000 cases, indicating that pawahara is no longer merely a matter of discourse but a tangible social problem officially measured by the state. This study construes pawahara not as a phenomenon confined to the workplace but as an act in which those in a superior position abuse power relations against those who are weaker. The film Tsumi no Koerevisits the Glico-Morinaga case that shook Japan in 1984–1985 and ended unsolved when its statute of limitations expired in 2000 (disguised as the “Gin-Man case”), focusing on the fate of three children whose voices were used in threat recordings against their will. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study draws on Takeo Doi's theory of amae for the psychological dimension and Chie Nakane's theory of tate shakai for the sociological dimension, analysing ten data that represent pawahara. The findings reveal two points. First, pawahara in the film is divided into two domains: the familial domain (exploitation of children, coercion of will, and control of thought) and the institutional–social domain (abuse of authority by state agents, hierarchical corporate pressure, and social discrimination aimed at preserving the group's sekentei, or public reputation). Second, such pawahara does not stem solely from individual malice but is deeply rooted in sociological structure of Japanese society: whereas the theory of tate shakai explains it as a vertical hierarchical structure that compels absolute obedience and perpetuates a chain of violence, silence, and abuse of power.
