Abstract
***** This study aims to analyze the forms of toxic masculinity and their influence on the identity crisis experienced by Junpei Murao in the anime Dance Dance Danseur. A qualitative descriptive method with a literary psychology approach was employed to analyze the data in this study. The data consisted of dialogues, monologues, and visual elements found in episodes 1 to 3 of the anime Dance Dance Danseur. The analysis of toxic masculinity was conducted using Terry A. Kupers’ (2001) theory, while the analysis of identity crisis was based on Carl Gustav Jung’s (1968) psychoanalytic theory. The results revealed 25 excerpts indicating toxic masculinity, with a total of 35 findings consisting of 14 instances of greed, 13 instances of misogyny, 6 instances of homophobia, and 2 instances of violent domination. One of the toxic masculinity trait, greed was found to be the most dominant form due to Junpei’s need for social recognition and his desire to maintain a masculine image. Furthermore, the findings indicate that toxic masculinity leads to the dominance of the persona and the repression of the shadow and anima, thereby hindering the individuation process toward the realization of the Self. Therefore, toxic masculinity strengthens Junpei's identity crisis by encouraging him to deny his interest in ballet and making it difficult for him to accept his true identity.
