Abstract

Paket C learners often faced difficulties in comprehending the English text due to their lack of vocabularies, interesting reading material, reading exercise, reading technique and the limited time. The tutor is challenged to find out topics, activities and materials to motivate learners in learning activity. Therefore, this action research was aimed at increasing Paket C learners’ reading comprehension at PKBM Wahyuaji Andadari in North Jakarta through PQ4R technique which consists of six steps; Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review. The research was conducted from August 2009 to November 2009. The writer applied the technique by combining it with interesting reading materials, topics and visual aids. The data were collected in three different ways; observation, interview and test. The tests used for pre test and post test were derived from Department of National Education. The result of this study showed that learners’ reading comprehension significantly improved. It was shown from the result of their test before and after intervention.. Before conducting the technique, the learners’ average score was 36.67 while in the second cycle, the learners’ average score improved to 68.84. In addition, based on the result of the interview, it was found that most of the learners said that this technique improved their reading comprehension. Furthermore, the use of PQ4R technique also developed learners’ schemata and participation during the learning teaching process. It can be concluded that the PQ4R technique is one of the effective techniques for Kejar Paket C learners to improve their reading comprehension skills. ***** Siswa Paket C sering menghadapi masalah dalam memahami bacaan dalam bahasa Inggis karena kekurangan kosakata, materi membaca yang menarik, latihan membaca, tehnik membaca dan waktu yang terbatas. Tutor ditantang untuk menemukan topik-topik, aktivitas-aktivitas dan materi-materi untuk memotivasi siswa dalam aktivitas belajar. Penelitian tindakan kelas ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca pemahaman siswa Paket C di PKBM Wahyuaji Andadari, Jakarta Utara melalui tehnik PQ4R, yang terdiri atas enam langkah, yaitu: Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite dan Review. Penelitian dilakukan dari Agustus 2009 hingga November 2009. penulis menerapkan tehnik ini dengan mengkombinasikannya dengan materi bacaan, topic dan alat Bantu yang menarik. Data dikumpulkan dalam tiga cara yang berbeda; observasi, wawancara dan tes. Tes yang digunakan untuk pre test dan post test berasal dari Departemen Pendidikan Nasional. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan membaca pemahaman siswa meningkat secara drastis. Hal ini ditunjukkan dari hasil tes mereka sebelum dan sesudah tindakan. Sebelum penerapan tehnik tersebut, nilai ratarata siswa adalah 36.67 sedangkan pada siklus kedua, nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat menjadi 68.84. Berdasarkan hasil wawancara diketahui bahwa hampir seluruh siswa mengatakan bahwa tehnik ini meningkatkan keterampilan membaca pemahaman mereka. Selanjutnya, penggunaan PQ4R tehnik juga mengembangkan pengetahuan dan partisipasi siswa selama proses belajar mengajar. Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa tehnik PQ4R adalah salah satu tehnik membaca yang efektif bagi siswa Kejar Paket C untuk meningkatkan membaca pemahaman mereka.
