Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between perceived social support and resilience in parents of children with special needs. Perceived social support is a subjective assessment by individuals of a support. Resilience is the quality possessed by individuals to survive, adapt, and develop when faced with difficult circumstances. This study was conducted to determine whether parents who have children with special needs have a perception of a good support and have become individuals who are resilient in living their daily lives. This research uses quantitative research methods. The instrument used in this study is the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) for the perceived social social support developed by Zimet et al. (1988), and Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) for resilience variables developed by Connor and Davidson (2003). The population in this study are parents of children with special needs. The sample in this study amounted to 164 parents who have children with special needs. This research uses purposive sampling technique. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant relationship between the perceived social support and resilience in parents of children with special needs. The correlation coefficient value of the two variables is 0.470 which indicates that the relationship between variables is positive. This can be interpreted that if the perceived social support is high, the higher the resilience of parents of children with special needs. Conversely, if the perceived social support is low then the resilience of parents of children with special needs will be low.
