Abstract

** This study aims to determine the influence of the coping strategy towards psychological distress of the college students who are affected by the COVID-19 pandemics. This research uses quantitative research methods with one predictor regression analysis technique. Coping strategy variable was measured by using The Brief COPE which designed by Carver (1997) with two types of coping strategies: problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. Psychological distress variable was measured by using HSCL-25 which designed by Derogatis, Lipman, Rickets, Uhlenhuth and Covi (1974). The sampling technique used in this study is purposive sampling technique. The total amount subject in this research is 250 college students in accordance with the research criteria. The results of a regression analysis for problem-focused coping towards psychological distress show F count 6,542 > F table 3,918 and the p-value = 0.012 < α 0.05 which means that there is a significant influence between problem-focused coping towards psychological distress. Furthermore, the results of regression analyses for emotion-focused coping towards the psychological distress show the F count 12,373 > F table 3.993 and the p-value = 0.001 < α 0.05 which means that there is a significant influence between emotion-focused coping with against psychological distress. The influence of both coping strategy towards psychological distress are shown in a negative direction which indicates the higher use of coping strategy associated with lower psychological distress.
