Abstract
********** ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate how the oppression and marginalization of indigenous people of Banten, Bali, Banda, Run, Ai, Rozengain, Ambon, Ternate, Tidore, and also southern Africa and Japan as the East during the Dutch and English colonialism are revealed in a narrative history Nathaniel’s Nutmeg written by Giles Milton. Deploying Said’s Orientalism and Spivak’s subaltern concept, this study applied descriptive analytical method to analyze the plantation of Eurocentrism and subalternity to the indigenous people (the East) practiced by the Dutch and English as colonialists (the West). The results of this study show that the notion of instilling Eurocentrism had oppressed and marginalized the indigenous people. Eurocentrism allowed the West to produce the stereotypes of the Orient (East) such as primitive, backward, uncivilized, inferior, feminine, and savage, while the West is seen progressive, civilized, superior, masculine, and moderate. Moreover, women in Banten, Run Island, and Bali received double colonization where they were sexually oppressed and marginalized in both colonial practice and patriarchal system. It is also found that while being inferior or subordinate to the Dutch and English colonialism, the indigenous people lose their voice as a subaltern which resulted fatal loss to its people, nature, and the loss of their territory. The colonialists’ oppression and marginalization resulted in the colonized people mentality such as the unbothered indigenous people of Run Island about colonialism historical story in their island. The ignorance and unconsciousness of Run Island’s indigenous people about colonialism historical story in their island is a prolonged effect of the colonizers’ oppression and marginalization practiced during colonial era. Keywords: Oppression, Marginalization, Eurocentrism, Subalternity, Double Colonization.
