--------------------------------------------------- Speech acts of compliment are often found in everyday life because they are related to manners. The speech act of complimenting is a speech act to appreciate or give a positive evaluation to the target of compliment. This speech can be influenced by non-linguistic factors, one of which is gender, so that compliment among women and men is different. The purpose of this study was to determine the speech acts of compliment among Japanese men covering the topic of compliment, strategies for compliment speech acts, and the function of compliment. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data comes from Japanese films, dramas, and TV shows which were collected using the listening technique. The data that has been collected is then analyzed using the theories of Holmes, Mizutani, and Mizutani on the topic of compliment; Brown and Levinson's theory of speech act strategies; and Wu's theory of the function of compliment. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that men complimented each other on the topics of ability, personality, appearance, family members, ownership, and place of residence with a variety of strategies, namely the strategy of bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. These speech acts of praise also have various functions, namely to express admiration; maintain solidarity; replaces gratitude and congratulations; softening face-threatening acts; open a conversation; reinforce the desired behavior. The results of this study are expected to add a deeper understanding of language behavior in speech acts of praise and can be used as a reference for Ibunka Rikai’s teaching materials.
