Abstract

Tujuan penilitian ini adalah untuk mengemukakan bagaimana diskriminasi terjadi di dalam puisi Maya Angelou. Tujuan penilitian ini juga untuk mengemukakan bagaimana bentuk diskriminasi yang terjadi di dalam puisi-puisi ini. Ada tiga puisi dari Maya Angelou yang akan di analisis untuk mengemukakan tujuan di atas tersebut. Penilitian ini menggunakan pendekatan semiotika dari Roland Barthes sebagai insturmen utama dalam menganalisa puisi-puisi ini. Analisis ini akan berbentuk deskripsi untuk mengikuti pendekatan semiotika dalam menganalisis ekspresi dan bahasa imajinasi untuk mengemukakan bagaimana diskriminasi ini terjadi. Setelah dilakukan analisis tersebut, ditemukan ada 131 signifiers dan termasuk di dalamnya ada 6 personifikasi, 117 imajeri, dan 6 simile. Semua temuan tersebut mengemukakan bahwa diskriminasi yang terjadi di dalam puisi Maya Angelou adalah berbentuk segregasi. ********** The study aims to depict the discrimination that happened in Maya Angelou poems entitled “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”, “Weekend Glory”, and “Still I rise”. It is not only how discrimination depicted in the poems, but also the form of the discrimination itself that happened in the poems. This study uses semiotic approach from Roland Barthes as the main instrument of the analysis of the poems. The analysis will be descriptive form in order to follow the semiotic approach in analyzing the Maya Angelou’s expression includes the figurative language. After the analysis, the study found 131 signifiers includes 6 personification, 117 imagery and 6 similes. Those findings are depicting that the form of discrimination in three Maya Angelou’s poems is segregation.
