Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the profile of undergraduate students’ error in using articles in their writings. As the method of the study, the writer used descriptive qualitative by using error analysis technique. For collecting data, the writer applies document analysis taken from students’ writings. The data were gathered from 40 students’ writings of English department. Furthermore, the data were administered by dividing them according to the types of errors, the frequency of errors, and the causes of errors in the use of article. The result of the study shows that there are 69 errors in the use of article found in the students’ writings. From the data, it is found that error of omission holds the most frequent error with total number 50 errors identified (72.46%), error of addition 18 errors occurred (26.08%), and error of selection only has 1 occurrence (1.45%). Further, the result shows that 34 occurrences were interlingual errors with percentage 49.27%, indicating the influence of the mother tongue. On the other hand, intralingual errors get 35 occurrences with percentage 50.72% of article errors, indicating the negative effect on the learning process. It is expected that the study would be more productive by carrying out the research on different educational institutions of all levels. Penelitian ini bertujuan menggambarkan profil dari error yang dilakukan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan article di tulisan mereka. Sebagai metode penelitian, penulis menggunakan deskriptif kualitaif dengan teknik analisis error. Untuk mengumpulkam data, penulis menggunakan analisis dokumen yang diambil dari tulisan mahasiswa. Data dikumpulkan dari 40 tulisan mahasiswa di jurusan bahasa Inggris. Lebih jauh, data lalu diolah dengan membagi nya berdasarkan tipe error, frekuensi error, dan sebab error dalam penggunaan article. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 69 error dalam penggunaan article ditemukan di tulisan mahasiswa. Dari data ditemukan bahwa error pengurangan merupakan error yang paling sering dengan jumlah total 50 error teridentifikasi (72.46%), error penambahan 18 error teridentifikasi (26.08%), dan error seleksi hanya teridentifikasi 1 error (1.45%). Sementara itu, hasil menunjukkan 34 kejadian merupakan error interlingual dengan persentase 49.27%, mengindikasikan pengaruh bahasa ibu. Lain pihak, error intralingual mendapatkan 35 kejadian dengan persentase 50.72% error article, mengidentifikasikan efek negative pada proses belajar. Penelitian ini diharapkan akan lebih memberikan banyak hasil dengan melaksanakan penelitian pada institusi pendidikan yang berbeda dari semua level.
