Abstract

This study aims to explore women’s oppression and their resistance towards the oppression in A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum. Deploying Patricia Hill Collins’ theory of Matrix of Domination and Self-Definition, this study applies a descriptive analytical research method in analyzing women’s resistance in the novel. The result of this study shows that female characters in the novel are experiencing oppressions that are managed within the four domains of power: structural, disciplinary, hegemonic, and interpersonal domain of power. Fareeda, Isra, Sarah, and Deya are oppressed through the intersecting oppressions of gender, race, and class that women are forced to agree on arranged marriage instead of pursuing education, stay within domestic sphere, maintain family’s reputation, and fulfill their roles as women. While men are privileged through their domination, women are aggrieved with their inferiority in voicing their thoughts as they are being silenced. The system of patriarchy has created a consciousness for women to stay within the domestic sphere and obey to their traditional gender roles. Furthermore, women’s self-definition had helped them to gather their self-worth to counter the oppression. Women’s relationship of one another and women’s literature have influenced oppressed women in finding the courage to resist the oppression. The female characters’ resistances are realized through their ability in maintaining self-valuation and respect, self-reliance and independence, and personal empowerment through the act of being brave in voicing their thoughts, going to college, living on their own, and encouraging each other for rising the awareness of self-definition.
