Abstract

A Raisin in the Sun. ******** This study is focused to figure out the oppression experienced by three women main characters (Lena, Ruth, and Beneatha) in A Raisin in the Sun play. By using intersectionality theory from Kimberle Crenshaw, the writer shows that women’s oppression in social life cannot work independently to reach the simultaneous oppression and result the disadvantage to the woman, even worse to black woman. Throughout the play, the three women main characters are oppressed by the only one adult man in the family, Walter and sometimes from the society. The three women main characters can also oppressed each other. The result of the study shows that the three women main characters are not only oppressed by race, gender, and class but also sexuality, religion, and culture depend on the character. The ways they deal with the oppression are also different.
