Abstract

**** This study aims to find out and discuss what and how the writers' stance is shown in citation practices in EFL undergraduate students' theses, especially in Introduction and Literature Review chapter. Qualitative approach with descriptive statistics to give description of numerical data is applied to analyze the writers' stance. Adopting Coffin's (2009) framework, this study will analyze the categories of writers’ stance based on dialogic dimension. The data for this study consists of citations practices from 50 Introduction and Literature Review chapter of EFL undergraduate students' theses in applied linguistics, gathered from repository UNJ from 2018 to 2022. In analyzing the data, this study used AntConc as the tool to find the frequency of the categories of writers' stance. The result of the study revealed that in Introduction and Literature Review chapter, the main category of writers' stance appear is Acknowledge that reach almost 70% from the corpus, followed by Distance that reach around 25%, and both are considered as dialogic expansive (neutral position which opens for multiple point of views). This indicate that writers tend to be neutral in their position-taking towards the references. Furthermore, by taking neutral position, the writers could strengthen their argument without being biased and it is better rather than taking position, whether it is supporting or giving critiques.
