Abstract

Teaching English speaking skills remains a difficulty for teachers. Students in junior high school remain hesitant to speak English. Shyness, a lack of vocabulary, which caused them to lose self-confidence, monotonous learning materials, and other characteristics have remained constant over the years (Raba, 2017). This study emphasises the design of short podcast-based learning materials as well as the infusion of critical thinking abilities into English-speaking learning materials. It is a podcast with a duration limit of under ten minutes. Short podcast-based lessons that infuse critical thinking are thought to stimulate students to speak clearly, increase their vocabulary, avoid boredom, and so on. This is a research-and-development study using Richey and Klein's DDR approach. Needs analysis, design, development, and evaluation are the steps. This research will look at existing learning materials used by teachers to examine if short podcasts, critical thinking skills, and microlearning are employed as the basic approaches. Then, the learning material is made by including KMB, critical thinking, and microlearning into the short podcast. Finally, to establish its validity, a validation sheet was made for experts for the feedbacks. The study involved teachers as data source from various cities surrounding JABODETABEK as well as schools that use the Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar. The study found that learning materials are still book-based, that only a few technology tools are employed, that short podcasts are not yet used, that only a few microlearning methods exist, and that not all components of critical thinking abilities are applied. The learning material for one topic was designed and developed by the researcher, and it consists of five short podcasts that are covered from pre-speaking to post-speaking. The overall validation results from the expert media, materials and users were very good. It means that the learning material is very good to be used in the classroom. The resources were also appropriate for the students. The cover design and background music just need to be revised. However, further study on the implementation of this research is required.
