Abstract

This study focuses on the factors affecting loan repayment (LR) in Indonesia's Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). SMEs play a vital role in the Indonesian economy but often face challenges in accessing formal financing. This study uses the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Behavioral Life-Cycle (BLC) to analyze the influence of Debt Management Literacy (DML), Loan Self-Control (LSC), and Financial Inclusion (FI) on LR. The research sample is 254 bankable SMEs in the Greater Jakarta area. This explanatory research uses a quantitative method. The results show that DML and LSC significantly influence SMEs' ability to repay timely loans. LSC demonstrates the importance of self-control in planning and adhering to budgets, avoiding impulsive decisions, and optimizing loans to support business growth. FI as moderation strengthens the relationship between DML and LSC with LR increases SMEs' access to formal financial services, and strengthens their resilience to economic uncertainty. The findings of this study provide important insights for financial institutions, governments, and related organizations in designing targeted financial literacy training programs and effective FI policies to support the sustainability and growth of SMEs in Indonesia to improve the financial stability of SMEs and encourage more inclusive and sustainable economic growth. The novelty of this study combines the behavioral life cycle theory and theory of planned behavior, filling the theoretical gap. Empirically, this study develops the DML and LSC instruments, and adds the barrier and usage dimensions to FI, providing new evidence on their influence on SME loan repayment behavior. Keywords: Debt Management Literacy, Financial Inclusion, Loan Self-Control, Loan Repayment, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
