Abstract
The Old Man and the Sea". This research used a qualitative research design where the themes of perseverance and adversity and how his acts of heroism affected other characters were analyzed in Ernest Hemingway's novel, "The Old Man and the Sea". Moreover, the traits that can lead to the development of character for the main character, Santaigo, is analyzed. The methodology encompasses several readings of the book to identify and analyze passages giving evidence of the Perseverance and Adversity of Santiago. This paper considers symbolic elements, including the aspect of objects and actions, to further explore the depth of Santiago's resilience. In a bid to frame the analysis, the study draws on concepts advanced by Anna Katharina and Rebecca Brennan: perseverance as the pursuit of goals despite setbacks, and adversity as the threats either to safety or well-being. Based on this study, various quotes can be obtained from the novella emphasizing themes of both perseverance and adversity through a philosophical framework. They also serve to heighten his character development, making him act in a heroic way towards characters such as Marlin and Manolin. The symbolic elements, therefore, suggest the image of Santiago, who never gives up in the face of hardship. Through the depiction of his bare footedness, the burning sun, and his clinging shirt, Hemingway shows the harsh realities of Santiago's existence but also commemorates his resilience and never-say-die spirit.
