Abstract

However, the unclear nature of these relationships may have negative effects on mental health, one of which is a decrease in self-esteem. Differences in how individuals respond to these relationships suggest the involvement of internal factors, such as adult attachment. This study aims to examine the influence of adult attachment on self-esteem in early adults involved in non-committal romantic relationships. This research used a quantitative approach with 306 early adult participants, obtained through an accidental sampling. Data were collected using the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-R) scale to measure adult attachment, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) to measure self-esteem. The results showed that adult attachment has a significant influence on self-esteem. Specifically, both attachment anxiety (B = -0.103; p < 0.001) and attachment avoidance (B = -0.074; p < 0.001) had a significant negative effect on self-esteem. These findings indicate that higher levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance are associated with lower self-esteem in the context of non-committal romantic relationships.
