Abstract
*** This study aimed to improve joint attention skills through the implementation of the pivotal response treatment method on a student with autism at SLB Pelita Hati. The intervention focused on the aspect of responding joint attention, with two behavioral indicators: (1) directing gaze toward an object and (2) following the gaze direction indicated by another person. The study used a single subject research method with an A–B–A design, and measurements were conducted using duration and frequency. The intervention was carried out by utilizing the child’s interests and applying natural reinforcement. The results showed a significant improvement, as reflected in the low ability observed during the first baseline (A1), where the average duration ranged from 4–5 seconds and frequency was 7 times per session. During the intervention phase (B), both duration and frequency increased significantly. The average duration was 31.142 seconds and frequency 14 times for the indicator of directing gaze toward an object, and the average duration for the second following the gaze direction indicated by another person was 18.363 seconds and frequency was 14 times. In the second baseline phase (A2), the student was able to maintain the skill, with an average duration of 17–21 seconds and a frequency of 14–15 times per session. These findings suggest that pivotal response treatment can effectively enhance joint attention abilities in children with autism at SLB Pelita Hati.
