Abstract

***** The implementation of the moving class system at SMAN 42 Jakarta as part of the Program Sekolah Penggerak brought changes to social interaction patterns and the learning process. These changes caused culture shock and withdrawal, especially among students with communication barriers. This situation required students to adjust or adapt to building relationships and participating in learning activities. Adaptation challenges also had the potential to form unbalanced groups, thus reducing student engagement in the learning process. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and literature review. Interviews involved nine informants: grade XI students, the Vice Principal for Curriculum, and Curriculum Staff, as well as two triangulation informants. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 42 Jakarta from May to July 2025. The results showed that the most dominant forms of adaptation were conformity and innovation. Students were able to adhere to educational goals and institutional methods while adapting their learning strategies and social interactions. Moving classes had a dominant, manifest impact, creating order, discipline, and student engagement in learning. However, it also had latent consequences, including selectivity in building social relationships and dysfunction in the form of physical and psychological fatigue due to high class mobility. The analysis was conducted using Robert K. Merton's adaptation typology. Through this theoretical framework, students' social adaptation in moving classes is understood as a response to the fit or mismatch between educational goals and the institutional methods they must undergo.
