Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis pengajaran bahasa Arab di Ma’had Muwahhadah Islamiyyah Krabi, Thailand, dengan menggunakan pendekatan studi etnografi. Fokus penelitian diarahkan pada proses pembelajaran bahasa Arab, interaksi sosial antara guru dan santri, serta peran lingkungan sosial dan budaya pesantren dalam membentuk praktik pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi partisipatif, wawancara mendalam, dan dokumentasi. Data dianalisis melalui tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan dengan mengedepankan perspektif emik dan etik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengajaran bahasa Arab di Ma’had Muwahhadah Islamiyyah tidak hanya berlangsung secara formal di dalam kelas, tetapi juga terintegrasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari santri melalui aktivitas keagamaan, interaksi sosial, dan budaya pesantren. Lingkungan bahasa yang religius dan kolektif berperan penting dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa Arab santri, khususnya dalam aspek berbicara dan pemahaman kosakata. Selain itu, peran guru tidak terbatas pada pengajar, tetapi juga sebagai pembimbing dan teladan dalam penggunaan bahasa Arab. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa pendekatan etnografi mampu memberikan pemahaman mendalam mengenai makna, nilai, dan praktik sosial yang melatarbelakangi pengajaran bahasa Arab di lembaga pendidikan Islam minoritas Muslim seperti di Thailand. This study aims to describe and analyze the teaching of Arabic at Ma’had Muwahhadah Islamiyyah in Krabi, Thailand, using an ethnographic study approach. The focus of the research is directed toward the Arabic language learning process, social interactions between teachers and students, and the role of the social and cultural environment of the Islamic boarding school in shaping language teaching practices. This study employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques including participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data are analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions by emphasizing both emic and etic perspectives. The findings indicate that Arabic language teaching at Ma’had Muwahhadah Islamiyyah is not limited to formal classroom instruction but is also integrated into the students’ daily lives through religious activities, social interactions, and boarding school culture. A religious and collective language environment plays an important role in improving students’ Arabic language skills, particularly in speaking and vocabulary comprehension. In addition, the role of the teacher extends beyond that of an instructor to include guidance and role modeling in the use of Arabic. This study affirms that the ethnographic approach is capable of providing an in-depth understanding of the meanings, values, and social practices underlying the teaching of Arabic in Islamic educational institutions within Muslim minority contexts such as Thailand.
