Abstract

***** The rapid transformation driven by technological developments has led to shifts in work patterns in the digital era. One of these changes is reflected in the increasing prevalence of freelance work, which offers flexibility through project-based employment systems. This study aims to describe and empirically examine the influence of time flexibility and socioeconomic status on Generation Z decision to engage in freelance work. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method through a closed-ended questionnaire. The study consisted of two independent variables, namely time flexibility (Variable X1) and socioeconomic status (Variable X2), and one dependent variable, namely the decision to engage in freelance work (Variable Y). Since the exact size of the population of Generation Z individuals working as freelancers is unknown (infinite population), the sample consisted of 100 respondents determined using the Lemeshow formula. Data were collected through online questionnaires distributed over a four-month period, from March 2026 to June 2026. The questionnaires were mainly distributed through social media platforms, particularly Twitter. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression analysis with the assistance of SPSS version 25. The results of this study indicate that time flexibility and socioeconomic status have a positive and significant effect on the decision to work freelance among Generation Z, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 36.4%, meaning that the two variables jointly explain 36.4% of the variation in the decision to work freelance, while the remaining variance is accounted for by other factors outside this research model. Partially, time flexibility exerts an influence with a regression coefficient of 0.296 and a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that the higher the perceived time flexibility, the greater the tendency of Generation Z to choose freelance work. Meanwhile, socioeconomic status also has a positive effect, with a regression coefficient of 0.316 and a significance level of 0.012 < 0.05, demonstrating that the economic conditions and social capital individuals possess further encourage the decision to work freelance. In deciding to pursue freelance work, individuals are motivated not merely by income generation, but also by considerations of control over working time and space as key factors in choosing freelance employment. These findings indicate that time flexibility and socioeconomic status are significant determinants of Generation Z's preference for freelance work in the digital era.
